I had no interest in it at all, mainly because I thought to myself, ‘Well, what is the point? ’ Because there were only a couple of middle-class people who were going abroad then. Such as us, workingclass people, we never went abroad. We went down to the east coast for the weekend or for a week. So I thought to myself, ‘Well, why wrap myself up with this when I am never going to use it? I am probably never even going to meet a French 30 LIVING WITH DIFFERENCE person. ’ So that’s what I did. I came away from school with quite good results but it was due to getting books out and studying things for myself, catching up on things that I didn’t understand in class, from when I got home till 10 o’clock at night, just to get things sorted out.
I used to study an Idiot’s Guide to Maths sort of book to figure out what they had been saying in class. I would get over that hurdle and then the next time we would have a maths lesson it was something completely different and I would think to myself, ‘Oh my God! ’ I used to spend hours poring through books until I understood what the teacher was flipping saying in class and that’s how I did it.
