Only Chicago and San Francisco had much place in the minds of dwellers on the eastern seaboard (Los Angeles had a little over 100,000 people and the whole Pacific Coast about 3 million), and only the most thoughtful persons had become aware that our natural resources were not inexhaustible.
In September 1883 Roosevelt bought a ranch in the Bad Lands of Dakota, where he lived intermittently for the next three years. Though this venture was not a financial success, it contributed importantly to both his health and his legend. In those days the West was still "wild," and a "four-eyed" easterner inevitably confronted difficulties there. Roosevelt's rule was to obey the biblical adjuration, "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men," but he never showed the white feather when faced with a challenge.
