Orders were issued for the 26th Reserve Regiment and II/2nd Grenadier Regiment to attack north of Harbonnieres with the remainder of 2nd Grenadier Regiment and III/376th Infantry Regiment attacking to the south. However, events had already overtaken the 109th as two battalions were already engaged around Vauvillers. The remainder were brought to a halt on the Amiens Defence Line by effective artillery and machine-gun fire, where they remained for the rest of the day. I and 11/376th Infantry Regiment had fared little better.
On the infantry's arrival at the third objective the troops of the 2nd and 9th cavalry brigades were relieved and withdrawn. The 119th Division began their move to the battle area by lorry at 1030hrs. They came under repeated attacks from RAF that greatly hindered their progress. The leading regiment arrived in Vrely at 1300hrs with the last pulling in at 1930hrs. Placed under the command of LI Corps, they were ordered to mount a counterattack with 192nd Division to re-establish a line between Harbonnieres and Le Quesnel.
In the clearing conditions, German batteries in Celestins Wood and Chipilly swung round to their left and began to engage the advancing Australians, quickly destroying several tanks. The right of the 14th (Victoria) Battalion was also pinned down by machine-gun fire from the I/55th Infantry Regiment, who by this time had occupied a sunken lane on the east side of the Morcourt Valley. The 39th Battery, supporting the Australians, galloped into action and fired 100 shells into the Germans, allowing the 14th (Victoria) Battalion to move into Morcourt from the south.
