Over 25 years of research reveals that high levels of teacher self-efficacy are strongly associated with higher levels of student performance. This chapter examines, separately, evidence about the nature and effects of teachers’ individual senses of efficacy and the collective efficacy that a group of teachers working together over some time might share.
4 His theory and research identifies the effects of selfefficacy feelings on teachers’ own behavior and the consequences of that behavior for others. This line of theory also specifies the immediate causes or stimulants of self-efficacy beliefs and the mechanisms through which such beliefs develop. Self-efficacy beliefs shape and influence one’s choice of activities and settings and can affect one’s efforts to adapt and learn once those activities are begun.
